Shirley Battles Stirling is a 1953 graduate of Cory-Rawson High School. She received an academic scholarship when she was a graduating senior that changed her life. Without this scholarship, Shirley would have never had the opportunity to attend college. As a result of the scholarship, she was able to attend Miami University of Ohio, where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. She used her degree to teach in Ohio, Michigan, and California. In 1960, she traveled to California for a vacation and decided she liked it so well that she stayed. She came back to the Midwest from 1968 to 1972 but returned to California after that and has been there ever since. Cory-Rawson High School still holds a special place in her heart and it is her desire to change the life of a student in the same way that her life was changed when she received a scholarship so many years ago. Because of one scholarship, many lives have been touched through Shirley’s teaching and then later, through her ability to transcribe braille, which she began doing during her spare time. Shirley is very excited to “pay it forward” and offer scholarship opportunities for students from Cory-Rawson High School. She hopes this scholarship will touch a life just as hers was touched in 1953.
