Celebrating Students

Each May, I am reminded why our community’s investment in education matters so deeply.

Over the past several weeks, I have had the privilege of attending scholarship award ceremonies across Hancock County. I have stood alongside generous fundholders, proud families, educators, and, most importantly, students preparing to take their next step forward. Whether that step leads to a college campus, a technical program, or directly into the workforce, each student represents promise, determination, and the future of our community.

This year, thanks to the generosity of fundholders and The Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation, more than 275 new and renewal scholarships totaling over $450,000 were awarded. These awards support a wide range of students with equally wide-ranging goals. Some recipients are college-bound, pursuing degrees in fields from education to engineering. Others are entering trades programs, preparing for careers that are essential to our local economy and our daily lives. Each path is worthy of celebration, and each student has earned this moment.

What many people do not see is the year-round effort that makes these celebrations possible. Long before a student walks across a stage or receives a certificate, thousands of applications are submitted, reviewed and carefully considered. Hundreds of volunteer evaluators generously give their time and expertise to ensure each independent scholarship is awarded thoughtfully and fairly. Fundholders work closely with our team to honor the intent behind their funds and to support students in meaningful ways.

I have the honor of coordinating this process, but it is truly a community effort. The scholarship program reflects the best of Hancock County: people stepping forward to invest in young adults they may never meet, trusting that education and training strengthen not only individual lives but our entire region.

To the students receiving scholarships this year, congratulations! You have worked hard to reach this milestone, and your community is proud of you. As you move into this next phase of your education or career, know that many people are cheering you on and believe in your potential.

To our fundholders, donors and volunteers, thank you. Your generosity, time, and care make these opportunities possible. You are helping shape the workforce, leadership and community of tomorrow.

Looking ahead, there are many ways to be part of this work. If you’re interested in establishing a scholarship fund, contact The Community Foundation to learn how your philanthropy can support students now and for generations to come. A scholarship is more than financial assistance. It is a lasting investment in people and possibilities.

Rising high school seniors should also know that this journey is just beginning. Each fall, The Community Foundation opens applications for more than 180 scholarship funds, offering opportunities for students with a wide range of interests, goals and career paths. We look forward to connecting with the next class of applicants and continuing this important tradition of community support.

Together, we are investing in students, strengthening our workforce and building a brighter future for Hancock County.
