Mary Jo Urschalitz was born May 24, 1921 to Joseph and Pearl (Waltermire) Urschalitz. She graduated from St Michaels Parochial school, Findlay High School, Findlay College and St Vincent’s Hospital School of Nursing, Toledo. Miss Urschalitz also attended the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and the former Mary Manse College, Toledo. She has taken graduate courses in the School of Music at Bowling Green State University. Mary Jo served in World War II as a member of the U.S. Army Nurses Corps in Germany. She was a life time member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic church where she was the organist for 15 years and was founder and director of the Guadalupe Choir, Alter Rosary Society member serving as Parish Commissioner and Chairperson for many programs. She was a registered nurse who volunteered her nursing to visit homebound patients. She was a public health nurse for the City of Findlay from 1946-1961 and worked in Home Health Care and The Blanchard Valley Hospital from 1978-1986. Mary Jo served the Spanish community as a Migrant Health Clinic Director and by visiting their summer camp.

Mary Jo loved music and shared her talents with those in area nursing homes giving musical programs for residents. She has performed many organists’ concerts in Findlay and in historical churches in Europe. She was a member of Alturas Club, U of F Charles T. Fox Society, and Black Swamp chapter of the American Guild of Organists, Ohio Music Teacher’s Association, Hancock County Music Teachers Association and she gave free music lessons to young students at the Salvation Army. Mary Jo died July 30, 2005.

Standards for Determining Eligibility

  • The applicant must be a high school graduating senior from a school located in Hancock County.
  • The applicant must be a full-time student attending a two or four-year accredited university or college pursuing a degree in nursing.
  • The applicant must have demonstrated good attendance while attending high school.
  • The applicant must have maintained a 2.75 GPA or above.
  • The applicant must be a citizen of the United States of America.
  • Financial need is a primary consideration.
  • Students who receive full scholarship support form other organizations or institutions will not be considered for this scholarship.
