The scholarship arose from dad's experience in his career, from not being the eldest son on a 40-acre farm in Sweden. His first job was harvesting sugar beets, so he and one brother emigrated to the United States in 1925 to a sponsoring family in rural Pennsylvania. There he worked in a furniture factory until 1928, then returned to Sweden for the summer. Upon his return to the United States, he settled in Connecticut and worked in a machine tool shop, where he was mentored and trained through the Depression and World War II. From that, he was able to build a house and raise a family. This scholarship is created in honor of him.
