Everett Donald “Bud” Retter (1913-1992) and Jean Ellis Retter (1915-2004) were natives of Winton, Minnesota. Bud worked most of his professional life for Ashland Oil Company and in 1951 the Company transferred the Retter family to Findlay, Ohio. They stayed because they liked living in Findlay and quickly became involved in the community and First Presbyterian Church. Bud was active in the Elks Lodge and Kiwanis and his favorite sport and hobby was golf. Jean belonged to the Orphan Annie Investment Club, loved to play bridge, and was artistic with interior designs. The Retter’s valued education and believed that their three children were well prepared for college at Findlay High School. Because of their devotion to Findlay, Jean Ellis Retter established this scholarship during November 1998 in memory of her husband and she served on the selection committee until her passing.
