The purpose of the Benjamin R. L. Lunn Merit Scholarship is to award financial assistance to a well-rounded student, broad in interests and varied in talents, who has financial need. The scholarship was established in 1998 by Ben’s parents Sondra and Larry Lunn and brothers Andrew and Nick. Ben was a 1993 graduate of Findlay High School, where he belonged to the National Honor Society; participated in the mentorship program, and was a member of the 1992 Homecoming Court. Ben was captain of the football team, receiving the Defensive Player of the Year Award and all-league honors. He also captained the Trojan track team, was a four-year track letterman, and was a member of the swim team his senior year. Ben enjoyed classical and contemporary music and played classical piano. Ben participated in Buckeye Boy’s State as well as a cadet program at the State Highway Patrol Academy. Ben was a cadet at the United States Military Academy from 1993-95. In 1996 he enlisted in the Army, where he served in the 1st Platoon of the 75th Ranger Regiment, earning his Ranger tab in May of 1998. He was a grenadier, an automatic rifleman, a radio operator, and a machine gunner.

Standard for Determining Eligibility of Students

This scholarship is dedicated to the well-rounded student who has demonstrated broad interests and varied talents. The recipient should be of good character and must demonstrate respect for his/her teachers, FHS staff and their peers.

  • The applicant must be a Findlay High School graduate (male or female).
  • The applicant will be a full-time freshman at an accredited university or college.
  • The applicant must have participated and lettered in a sport at Findlay High School, preferably football or track.
  • The applicant must have participated in school and community activities.
  • Student achievement, merit, and accomplishment are to be considered primary factors in selection.
  • The applicant must maintain a 3.4 GPA. (Ben had a 3.438, he ranked 69 out of 420 students.)
  • The applicant must be a citizen of the United States of America.
  • The applicant must demonstrate financial need.
  • Students who receive full scholarship support from other organizations or institutions will not be considered for this scholarship.
