Women's Giving Circle Awards Three Grants

April 12, 2018

The Handbags That Help women’s giving circle held their annual celebration meeting Wednesday, April 11 and awarded grants totaling $35,575 to three local nonprofits.

  • Dental Center of Northwest Ohio – Findlay Smiles - $2,500
The Findlay Smiles office of the Dental Center of Northwest Ohio is the only Medicaid dental provider in Hancock County. Nearly half of its 7,600 patients are children, and oral healthcare is their number one unmet health need. Findlay Smiles will use these dollars to purchase kits including toothbrush, toothpaste, floss and educational information to distribute at school and community outreach events.
  • Raise the Bar Hancock County – The Leader in Me - $23,945
Raise the Bar is a community collaboration initiative focused on aligning the local education system with economic growth and quality of life. As part of the cradle-to-career approach, the Leader in Me program was implemented at the K-5 level. Leader in Me is a whole-school transformational program based on the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People to develop 21st Century skills in young people as early as possible. The goal is to have the program in all city and county schools by 2025. This grant will support two schools in their four-year implementation process and start two new schools on their Leader in Me journeys.
  • University of Findlay – Clubhouse Reading Center - $9,130
The Clubhouse Individual Program (CHIP) offers free one-on-one literacy tutoring for students in grades 1-9 four days per week. University of Findlay education students conduct the tutoring under supervision to help develop teaching skills. Students are also given books to take home and parents are trained to help continue to develop strong readers. The grant will help the Clubhouse pay its tutors, purchase in-home reading materials and conduct literacy workshops for parents.

Handbags That Help has granted $446,495 in ten grant cycles to support the following 24 local nonprofit organizations.
