Recreation Is Community
When most people hear the word recreation, they think of sports, parks, camps, trails, playgrounds or family outings. Those are certainly part of the picture. But recreation is about much more than how we spend our free time. At its best, recreation helps us connect, grow, recharge and build stronger communities.
Whether it's a child's first swim lesson, a family exploring a local park, a senior participating in a wellness program, or volunteers helping others enjoy the outdoors, recreation creates opportunities for people to find where they belong. It supports physical health, mental well-being, social connection and lifelong learning.
Here in Hancock County, recreation shows up in many ways. It can be found at Camp Berry, where Scouts gain confidence and life skills through outdoor experiences. It appears in the programs offered by On Target Outfitters, where children and families connect through activities like archery, fishing, and outdoor exploration. It is present at The Cube, Marathon Diamonds, Riverside Pool, the Findlay Family YMCA, Miracle Park, the Children's Museum of Findlay, and throughout our community's outstanding park system. Together, these organizations and many others help create the experiences that make this a special place to live, work and raise a family.
The unfortunate reality is that recreation is becoming more expensive for both families and the organizations that provide these opportunities. Rising program costs, equipment expenses, staffing needs and facility improvements can put meaningful experiences out of reach for some community members. At the same time, demand for quality recreational programming continues to grow.
That's why The Community Foundation created Fun for All.
Through Fun for All, we invest in projects and programs that remove barriers and expand access to recreation across Hancock County. The goal is simple: ensure more people can participate in the activities that enrich their lives and strengthen our community. From supporting free admission opportunities and enhancing community programming to helping organizations reach more participants, Fun for All helps make recreation more accessible and inclusive.
We believe everyone deserves the chance to experience the joy, connection and personal growth that recreation provides. We also believe some of the best ideas for creating those opportunities come from the people who live here. That's why we're asking you to think creatively about what could be possible. What new recreational opportunities would help our community thrive? What barriers could be removed? How might we engage more residents, introduce a new activity, improve access or create experiences that bring people together? If you have an idea that could expand recreation and make Hancock County an even better place to live, we want to hear it.
Great communities don't just happen. They're built through shared experiences, creative thinking, and a willingness to invest in one another. Recreation is one of the ways we do exactly that.
