Listening, Learning and Making Progress Together
When our community takes the time to come together and share honestly about its hopes and challenges, it is a gift. This most recent round of Community Conversations hosted by The Community Foundation once again demonstrated the power of listening and the deep commitment people across Hancock County have to the place they call home.
These conversations reaffirm what we heard in 2017 and again in 2022. Across different moments in time and shifting circumstances, residents continue to point toward a consistent set of priorities that shape quality of life in our community. Tier 1 priorities include childcare, housing, mental health, safety and recreation. These remain top of mind, followed closely by tier 2 priorities: arts, diversity, transportation and workforce development. Together, they reflect what residents say matters most for connection, opportunity and well‑being.
That consistency tells us that the challenges our community names are not fleeting, and neither are the hopes and dreams you have for our collective home. It also reinforces the responsibility of the Foundation to remain steady in its role as a listener, partner and steward of community trust. The Community Conversations process helps ensure our grantmaking and partnerships are grounded in lived experience, not assumptions.
Equally important are the voices behind the data. Each conversation represented an investment of time, thought and care from people who showed up because they believe in the future of this community. Thank you to every participant who took part thoughtfully and respectfully, whether by voting on priorities or sharing their perspective. Your participation strengthens not only our work, but the community itself.
The themes we heard this year highlight both urgent needs and long‑term opportunities. They highlight the importance of addressing immediate barriers while also investing in areas that help individuals and families thrive over time. They point to places where collaboration matters; where funders, nonprofits, public partners and residents can come together for greater impact.
For the Foundation, these insights will continue to guide how we convene and invest. Community Conversations are not a one‑time exercise but are part of the Foundation’s commitment to listen first and act with intention. The report reflects what we heard and serves as a compass for the work ahead. Community change is most effective when it is shaped by the people who experience it every day. We are honored to walk alongside residents in this process and grateful for the trust placed in us.
By listening and responding, we can continue building a community where everyone can belong and succeed, together.
