HancockREADS Literacy Framework

The HancockREADS mission/vision parallels Ohio’s Literacy Framework (ODE, 2000) and supports the six elements of literacy (reading, writing, speaking, listening, critical thinking and communication).

HancockREADS Literacy Framework Explanation:

Build collaborative leadership
Engage in ongoing planning to ensure that Hancock County’s most important literacy needs are addressed by building collaborative leadership.

Effective Core Programs
Build a countywide philosophy and core literacy programs that meet the needs of all citizens by,

• promoting conducive literacy/learning environment

• realizing high expectations

Intervention
Create effective early intervention strategies that overcome reading difficulties by,

• diagnosing literacy difficulties early

• providing instructional intervention

• creating intervention supports

• providing literacy training to volunteers, parents and educators.

Assessment and Accountability
Develop user-friendly ways to measure progress in literacy and use assessments to improve literacy instruction.

Home/School/Community Partnerships
Develop literacy experiences in which learning in school and at home are challenging and rewarding by,  

• fostering literacy development in the home

• supporting family literacy education

• training literacy volunteers

• engaging businesses, high education, public libraries and community organizations in literacy activities

Use of Resources
Reallocating and leveraging available resources by,

• exploring funding options

• linking with community resources

• utilizing personnel effectively

• assessing the impact of facilities and equipment on learning
