HancockREADS
The Literacy Initiative of The Community Foundation

Introduction:
The  Board of Directors of The Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation established the literacy initiative called HancockREADS in 2001 as a means to help the over 8,555 Hancock County individuals having difficulty reading, writing or using computational skills necessary in everyday life.  Today, adults need higher level reasoning skills. Our mission is to develop a communitywide philosophy for literacy and to identify and implement changes in our county to improve literacy development so that all citizens meet with success.  Our goal is to stamp out illiteracy.

HancockREADS is operated under the leadership of a six member advisory committee comprised of community representatives with interest and expertise in literacy issues. They want to ensure that families and community members in Hancock County and Findlay City are literate and enjoy the benefits of literacy.

While there is no prescription to ensure success in obtaining a grant from the HancockREADS Fund, these Guidelines for Grantseekers explains policies, priorities, limitations, deadlines, and other information necessary for securing support and the factors that influence grantmaking decisions.

The HancockREADS Advisory Committee is comprised of six (6) members from the Hancock County community.  Members are selected as follows:

  • One member from the Findlay City Schools

  • One member from the Hancock County Schools

  • One member from a community organization

  • One member from the business or professional community

  • One member at large from the community

  • One member form the Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation Staff

Members are chosen by the schools and by recommendations from the community and the Advisory Board itself.  Terms of service will be three (3) years.
